The most important thing about carbide tooling is to use the right speeds and feeds. These recommendations are broken down into different categories to make it easier for you to make smarter decisions when running your endmills. High performance end mills need to be run according to specific material families. These parameters are listed separately. These documents are available in PDF format.
People focus too much on the speed of the machine when deciding which parameters to use. This is a mistake. The speed can be adjusted by focusing on the correct feed per tooth (FPT). When a part is programmed and ready for production, the programmer might choose conservative parameters, which can lead to chatter. Chatter can be described as part vibration (noise), which is caused by the tool's inability to cut properly. The first thing to do is slow down the RPM. This will usually eliminate the chatter. Although this works sometimes, it can be unproductive. This is because the FPT has increased simply by slowing down the feed and keeping it constant. The FPT in the beginning was probably too low, which is likely what caused the chatter.
Pick the material that will be machined starting from the left-hand side of the chart.
The diameter of your mill will determine the FPT that is appropriate for the material. FPT is either in inches (IPT), or millimeters (MMPT).
The radial depth at which the cut is made determines the chip load factor (CLF).
Select the correct surface feet per minute or surface metres per minute (SFM).
Calculate the RPM using the SFM, the mill's diameter and the diameter.
Calculate the feed rate using the IPT and CLF numbers.
A lower SFM is a good option if you are conservative. However, it is recommended to always use the FPT.
You will have a greater success rate when part programming. This will also make you more productive.

End Mills are used for making shapes and holes in a workpiece during milling, profiling, contouring, slotting, counterboring, drilling, and reaming applications. They are designed with cutting teeth on the face and edge of the body and can be used to cut a variety of materials in several directions. Find out more about the types of mills MSC offers and all the applications in which…
The key difference between PVD and CVD is that the coating material in PVD is in solid form whereas in CVD it is in gaseous form. PVD and CVD are coating techniques, which we can use to deposit thin films on various substrates. Coating of substrates is important on many occasions. The coating can improve the functionality of the substrate; introduce new functionality onto the substrate, protect it from harmful…
Today I talk about how to choose cemented carbide milling cutters. For milling stainless steel, except for end mills, some end mills and hard alloys as milling cutter materials, other types of milling cutters are made of high-speed steel, especially tungsten-molybdenum series and high-vanadium high-speed steel, which have good results. The durability can be 1 to 2 times higher than W18Cr4V. Cemented carbide grades suitable for…
