Carbide End Mill Feeds and Speeds

The most important thing about carbide tooling is to use the right speeds and feeds. These recommendations are broken down into different categories to make it easier for you to make smarter decisions when running your endmills. High performance end mills need to be run according to specific material families. These parameters are listed separately. These documents are available in PDF format.

People focus too much on the speed of the machine when deciding which parameters to use. This is a mistake. The speed can be adjusted by focusing on the correct feed per tooth (FPT). When a part is programmed and ready for production, the programmer might choose conservative parameters, which can lead to chatter. Chatter can be described as part vibration (noise), which is caused by the tool's inability to cut properly. The first thing to do is slow down the RPM. This will usually eliminate the chatter. Although this works sometimes, it can be unproductive. This is because the FPT has increased simply by slowing down the feed and keeping it constant. The FPT in the beginning was probably too low, which is likely what caused the chatter.

Pick the material that will be machined starting from the left-hand side of the chart.

The diameter of your mill will determine the FPT that is appropriate for the material. FPT is either in inches (IPT), or millimeters (MMPT).

The radial depth at which the cut is made determines the chip load factor (CLF).

Select the correct surface feet per minute or surface metres per minute (SFM).

Calculate the RPM using the SFM, the mill's diameter and the diameter.

Calculate the feed rate using the IPT and CLF numbers.

A lower SFM is a good option if you are conservative. However, it is recommended to always use the FPT.

You will have a greater success rate when part programming. This will also make you more productive.
