Although the cost of cermet is comparable to that of coated cemented carbide, the Carbide Cermet Inserts has better cutting performance and longer tool life due to its single material. Therefore, the surface roughness and dimensional accuracy of the workpiece can be improved by using cermet inserts instead of cemented carbide inserts with ceramic coating.

1、 Properties of Carbide Ceramic Inserts

In the process of machining, cutting is one of the most basic, common and important methods in industrial production, which directly affects the efficiency, cost and energy consumption of industrial production. Improving the processing efficiency will bring great social and economic benefits. In recent years, the ceramic tool industry has made rapid development, and most of the modern ceramic tool materials are composite materials. At present, the ceramic materials used in cutting tools are mainly alumina series, silicon nitride series, titanium boride series and cermet series. The cermet matrix composite is a new type of material developed gradually in the 1930s. Cermets are widely used as tool materials because of their high hardness, good wear resistance and good thermal conductivity.

2、 Characteristics and machining range of cermet inserts

Cermet tools in the cemented carbide industry generally refer to the tool with TiCN / TiC / tin as the hard phase and Co or Ni as the bonding phase. In many cases, more than one nitride, carbide and carbonitride in the IVB, VB and VIB group metals are added as additives to enhance the mechanical and high temperature properties of cermet.

The characteristics of cermet blade are as follows: (1) high hardness; (2) low affinity with the material of the workpiece to be processed; (3) good chemical stability; (4) good heat resistance and wear resistance.

Suitable processing range: cermet tools are suitable for semi finishing and finishing of various steel and iron castings. When the cutting depth is below 2.5mm, the feed rate per revolution is below 0.25mm/r, and the feed rate per tooth is below 0.2.mm/tooth, the cermet tool has excellent cutting performance. All cermet tools with the above materials can provide stable tool life and good surface finish. However, it is not suitable for cermet tools in the field of intermittent cutting.

Note: in terms of material hardness, ceramic inserts tools are mainly suitable for semi finishing and finishing steel and iron castings with hardness below hrc45. For hard to machine materials above hrc45, such as high hardness cast iron roll, high chromium cast iron, high temperature alloy and other materials, it is better to choose cubic boron nitride tool or ceramic tool.
