What is the difference between turning and milling?

Turning processing is to use the rotary motion of the workpiece and the linear or curved motion of the tool to change the shape and size of the blank on the lathe, and process it to meet the requirements of the drawing.
Turning is a method of cutting a workpiece on a lathe by rotating the workpiece relative to the tool. The cutting energy of turning is mainly provided by the workpiece rather than the tool. Turning is a basic and common cutting method, which occupies a very important position in production. Turning is suitable for machining revolving surfaces. Most workpieces with revolving surfaces can be processed by turning methods, such as inner and outer cylindrical surfaces, inner and outer conical surfaces, end faces, grooves, threads, and special surfaces for rotary forming. The tools used are mainly turning tools.

1. Different features: Turning means that lathe processing is a part of mechanical processing. Lathe processing mainly uses turning tools for turning parts of rotating workpieces. Lathes are mainly used for machining shafts, disks, sleeves and other workpieces with rotating surfaces. They are a type of machine tool processing widely used in machinery manufacturing and repair factories. The CNC lathe can process the complex shape of the rotating body. Milling is to fix the blank, and use a high-speed rotating milling cutter to move on the blank to cut out the required shapes and features. Traditional milling is mostly used to mill simple shape features such as contours and grooves.

2. Different functions: Turning is a method of cutting the workpiece on the lathe by rotating the workpiece relative to the tool. The cutting energy of turning is mainly provided by the workpiece rather than the tool. The milling and boring machining center can perform three-axis or multi-axis milling and boring for machining, molds, inspection tools, molds, thin-walled complex curved surfaces, artificial prostheses, blades, etc. When selecting the content of CNC milling, the advantages and key role of CNC milling machine should be fully utilized.
